| RIPARIAN AND WETLAND PROTECTION PROGRAM |
| Streambank stabilization is a treatment(s) used to stabilize and protect streambanks. The practice stabilizes the eroding streambanks, reduces damage from sediment and runoff to downstream areas, and improve wildlife habitat. It is used on highly erodible or critically eroding streambanks. These areas usually cannot be stabilized by ordinary conservation treatment and management, and if left untreated can cause severe erosion or sediment damage. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Create, enhance or restore riparian and wetlands areas to support their natural functions and values. Promote the use of riparian and wetland areas in address water quality, wildlife habitat, and flood damage reduction in areas targeted by the Kansas Water Plan and other high priority areas as indenified by state and federal agencies. Promote streambank stabilization and riparian areas restoration to improve water quality and wildlife habitat. ADMINISTERING AGENCIES The State Conservation Commission (SCC) is responsible for administrative rules, regulations, guidelines and procedures. In addition, the SCC administers financial assistance and payments. The Conservation Districts are responsible for projects development and implementation at the local level includes local coordination of demonstration education projects. The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks (KDWP), USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE), U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), the Kansas Forest Service (KFS), and SCC may provide technical and financial assistance for project design and installation. They may also provide information on best management practices. Permits, are required, must be obtained by projects from the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources, KDWP, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. |
