ELIGIBILITY: The Limerick Awards Program is open to all elementary students grades three (3) through eight (8); home schooled children in grades three (3) through eight (8); and children in Special Purpose Schools **(no age or grade distinction). These youth may be identified with schools, 4-H clubs, Boy or Girl Scouts, church groups, etc. Each district is allowed to submit two (2) entries in the State Limerick Awards Program (grades 3-8) and two (2) for Special Purpose Schools. Entrants may compete in the contest conducted by the conservation district in which they reside, or in the conservation district where they attend school. Entrants may participate in only one district contest.
SUBJECT MATTER: The subject matter shall be related to the use and/or conservation of natural resources (examples: soil, water, plants, trees, minerals, wildlife, beautification, recreation, etc. with special emphasis on the conservatin of soil and water) for making a better community for present and future generations.
ENTRIES: Should be sent to the Secretary of the Conservation Education & Youth Committee of the Kansas Association of Conservation District (Miami county Conservation District, 100 N. Angela #3, Paola KS 66071) NO EARLIER THAN SEPTEMBER 1 AND NO LATER THAN OCTOBER 19 OF EACH YEAR. The entries from each district must be entered in the State Limerick Awards Program by the Conservation District board of supervisors. For identification, a tab with information containing the participant's name, age, grade, home address, and the conservation district must be pasted to the back of the back of the limerick in the lower left-handed corner. (Special purpose students need not list age or grade). No identification is to be on the front of the limerick. (We are asking that each conservation district type the names of each entry for correct spelling and readablility). Please use the tab below or one like it.
EXHIBITING AND AWARDS: Limericks should be exhibited at the annual meeting of the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts at which time the winners will be announced. First Place winner will receive a plaque, second place medals or trophies and a framed certificate, and third place a medal or trophy and framed certificate. Framed certificates will be presented to five honorable mention winners. It is the responsibility of each conservation district to pick up their limerick entries after the final general session.
LIMERICK RULES:
The limerick must have a name or title Limericks shall be place on a 12"x18" poster paper and arranged for horizontal display only. In the limerick, the basic unit (called a foot) contains three syllables, with heavy accent or beat on the third syllable: ta-ta-TUM. Three such units (or feet) are the first, second and fifth lines; two in the third and fourth lines. The heavy beat or accent must always fall on a syllable, wich can properly be accented. WRAP LIMERICKS BETWEEN CARDBOARD AND DO NOT ROLL OR FOLD FOR MAILING.
The judges will select winners according to the score sheet as follows:
